The Buddyrevelles
Don't Quit

The band’s third album (and their first in nearly seven years), finds them distilling the very best of their previous work into a lithe, muscular 32 minutes of indie pop bliss. The Buddyrevelles channel the sensitive instrumental interplay of Built to Spill and the melodic rapture of the New Pornographers, refracting these influences through a Chicago post-rock lens to create a sound uniquely their own. Like the best pop songs, Don’t Quit’s ten smart, surprising tracks never overstay their welcome. Call it “Hitman Pop”—focused, efficient, and maximally powerful.

Anders Svanoe (feat. Roscoe Mitchell)
Lines and Spaces

Madison, Wisconsin saxophonist Anders Svanoe has been earning his stripes playing with, among others, Tomato Box Creative Music Ensemble and The Ed Anders Quartet. Here, in his first album under his own name, he teams up with AACM legend Roscoe Mitchell for an intense duet that finds the pair exploring Art Ensemble of Chicago-style percussion as well as homemade wind instruments in a joint composition featuring each player's distinctive brand of improvising. Also on the album is another duet with Anders's Tomato Box cohort, bassist Henry Boehm (bass), and a large ensemble piece dedicated to Anthony Braxton. Features Anders Svanoe (saxophones, "hoseaphone"), Roscoe Mitchell (percussion, saxophone, flute), Henry Boehm (bass), Michael Brenneis (drums), Ed Fila (trumpet), Jim Doherty (guitar).

The Phil Mosberg Quartet
The New Balance

The Phil Mosberg Quartet is back with their second release for Solitaire Records, The New Balance. A little older, a little wiser, but no less intense or ferocious, the group still manages to pull the listener in with its blend of intricate compositions and inspired improvisations. The band picks up where its debut Forest Through the Trees (SR001) left off, running through a set that recalls the jazz tradition while expanding on it. The group's sound has matured and still contains the edge and excitement that keeps this band at the forefront of experimental, modern jazz. Features Phil Mosberg (guitar/compositions), Jon Irabagon (tenor sax, alto sax, clarinet), Nate Bakkum (bass) and Vance Okreszewski (drums).

Triage
Premium Plastics

On their second release Premium Plastics (the first for Solitaire), Dave Rempis (of the Vandermark 5) leads this trio of young and hungry players through a workout of quiet textural pieces, grooving jazz-ish tunes and wailing, expressionist romps. The band uses their original compositions as springboards for their improvisations, combining the rhythmic sensibilities of the American jazz and free jazz traditions with the more abstract spaces frequently associated with European improvisers. The recontextualization of stylistic elements from these disparate traditions provides unique and powerful insights into them and their respective legacies. Features Dave Rempis (saxophones), Jason Ajemian (bass) and Tim Daisy (drums).

Release: September 2001

Phil Mosberg/Marta Tennae
One Day

Phil Mosberg and Marta Tennae (aka Jeremy Barnes ex of Bablicon and Neutral Milk Hotel) spent one inspired afternoon creating this extemporaneous document. At times delicate, at times raucous, the pair of improvisers and friends never lose sight of the goal of communication with each other as well as with the listener. With two extended improvisations and four short works the two explore the range of emotions from raging free jazz to barely audible intensities. Features Phil Mosberg (electric, acoustic and prepared guitars) and Marta Tennae (drum set and electronics).

The Phil Mosberg Quartet
Forest Through the Trees

Combining carefully crafted compositions, tight arrangements and freely improvised passages, the Phil Mosberg Quartet represents some of the best that the young Chicago free jazz scene has to offer. Their debut album, Forest Through the Trees, is a dizzying display of high octane playing mixed with elegant moody passages all delivered with the kind of energy that you've come to expect from Chicago jazz. Features Phil Mosberg (guitar/compositions), Jon Irabagon (tenor sax, alto sax, clarinet), Nate Bakkum (bass) and Vance Okraszewski (drums).
